What to Expect on Your DVSA Practical Driving Test

Knowing exactly what to expect on your DVSA practical driving test can significantly reduce anxiety and improve performance. Many candidates who are competent drivers still make errors simply because they are surprised by what happens during the test. This guide walks you through every stage.

Before You Arrive: What to Bring

  • Your UK provisional driving licence (photocard). This is mandatory — without it, the test cannot proceed.
  • If you have an older paper licence, bring your theory test pass certificate as well.
  • Glasses or contact lenses if you need them to see the number plate at 20 metres.
  • A roadworthy vehicle — either your own or your instructor's car.

At the Test Centre: What Happens First

Arrive at the test centre at least 10 minutes before your appointment. Your examiner will call your name in the waiting room. They will ask you to sign the attendance register and confirm your identity using your licence.

You will then walk with the examiner to your vehicle in the car park.

The Eyesight Check

Before getting into the car, the examiner will ask you to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres (approximately 5 car lengths). If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you must wear them for this check.

Failing the eyesight check means an immediate test failure and your test will not continue. If you have any concerns about your eyesight, have it checked professionally before your test date.

Show Me, Tell Me Questions

Before driving, the examiner will ask you one "tell me" question (where you explain something verbally) and one "show me" question (where you demonstrate something on the vehicle while driving). Examples include:

  • "Tell me: how would you check the tyres are correctly inflated?"
  • "Show me: how would you switch on the rear fog light?"

Getting a show me / tell me question wrong counts as one driving fault — it does not automatically fail you.

The Drive: What the Examiner is Looking For

The driving section lasts approximately 40 minutes. You will drive on a variety of road types — residential streets, A-roads, and occasionally dual carriageways or motorways. The examiner will give you directions using a sat-nav (for approximately 20 minutes of independent driving) and spoken instructions.

The examiner is assessing your ability to drive safely and competently. They record:

  • Driving faults (minor): You can accumulate up to 15 and still pass.
  • Serious faults: One serious fault = automatic fail.
  • Dangerous faults: One dangerous fault = automatic fail. The examiner may physically intervene.

Manoeuvres

You will be asked to perform one of the following manoeuvres:

  • Parallel parking (roadside)
  • Bay parking (at the test centre, driving in or out)
  • Pulling up on the right side of the road, then reversing two car lengths, then rejoining traffic

There is approximately a 1-in-3 chance of also being asked to perform an emergency stop.

Finding Out Your Result

At the end of the test, the examiner will tell you your result at the test centre. If you pass, you will receive a pass certificate and can use your provisional licence to drive independently while you wait for your full licence.

If you do not pass, the examiner will go through your driving faults with you. Most candidates find this constructive — it identifies exactly what to work on before retaking.
